7th round (240 overall): Alex McCalister, Defensive End, Florida

Measurables: 6’6// 239 lbs.

Analysis:

Seven picks later, the Philadelphia Eagles stayed on the defensive side of the ball by selecting defensive end from Florida, Alex McCalister. The first thing that comes to my mind about McCalister is a physical freak. He stands 6’6 but is undersized at 239 lbs. He also has an insane 36” arm length. This gives him to create leverage and spacing against offensive lineman which could be lethal. This lead to 12.5 sacks over the last two years.

Projection:

Look for McCalister to be used only in pass rushing situations. He provides very little run support given his small frame. To be anything other than a sub-package guy he needs to put on a lot more weight and work on his run stopping ability. McCalister has all the physical tools in the world but is extremely raw. McCalister is an interesting project for the staff to work on and will provide some pass rushing potential in his first year. His future is dependent on how well he progresses and if he can add to his undersized frame. Think Barkevious Mingo frame coming out of college but a lot rawer.

GRADE: B+

McCalister could be an interesting player to keep your eyes on as the season progress. His arm length could provide many mismatches in pass rushing situations but couldn’t be farther from being a complete player. If he puts it all together and becomes more polished. Watch out.
