Philadelphia Eagles 2016 Schedule Released: Preview & Predictions
Week Five: Philadelphia Eagles @ Detroit Lions
Sunday, October 9, 1:00 PM (FOX)
History: Eagles lead all time series 16-14-2; Last Meeting: (2015) 45-14 Lions
Just a year after the Lions gutted the Eagles on Thanksgiving 45-14, The Eagles travel back to Detroit to see if they can get revenge on the team from the Motor City.
Story lines
Jim Schwartz, the defensive coordinator for the Eagles, who could end up being the most important acquisition by the Eagles this off season, returns to the place that he head coached from 2009-2013. Regarded for his aggressive defensive scheme, look for the Eagles front line to put ample pressure on Lions Quarterback Matthew Stafford early and often. And expect to see an animated Schwartz on the sidelines throughout the game.
The Detroit fan base was hit with a shocker and shades of Barry Sanders, as one of the top wide receivers in the game and perhaps the franchise’s best WR ever, Calvin Johnson, retired at the age of 30 during this off season. The future hall of famer leaves a gaping hole in the Lions offense as Stafford is without his number one target for the first time in his career. Will the Lions be able to find Johnson’s successor? Can they win without him? A lot more pressure will be put on Stafford without Megaton on the field with him this year.
Prediction: WIN (3-1)
I believe this will be the coming out party for the Eagles defense and Schwartz. I think the Eagles front seven will wear out the Lions offensive line, causing Stafford to panic early and make turnovers. I also believe the loss of Johnson may be too much for the usual Lions aerial assault. Expect for the Eagles to come out of Detroit winners.
