Selection: USC
If I were a big-name football coach, I would opt for college over the pros.
Kelly’s biggest problem with the Eagles has been dealing with the players. He doesn’t seem to appreciate that many professional players come complete with huge egos and a desire to make as much money as they can.
In college, that isn’t an issue. The players don’t get paid, and if they don’t toe the company line, the coach can bury them, threatening their future. There’s also less concern about letting talented players leave, because at big-time programs like USC, next year’s recruiting class is likely to bring an adequate replacement for a departed DeSean Jackson or Evan Mathis.
USC might not be Nike University like Oregon, but they’re certainly an elite program with as many resources as any school. It might take a couple of years, but Kelly would likely soon find himself at the top of his sport again. All the criticism he received in the NFL would be left safely behind him.
