If I’m Chip Kelly, coaching the USC Trojans would be my job title for 2016. Three years in the NFL were a good experience, and also found success. Making the playoffs year one and gaining full general manager responsibilities after just two seasons speak to tremendous achievements. Unfortunately, what college football offers in comparison to what the NFL demands is the deciding factor to walk away from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Chip will no longer have to deal with multi-million dollar personalities that pick and choose when and if they buy into his system. The recruiting process of hand selecting high school talent instead of the NFL draft and free agency removes the “business” side of football. Chip will once again “own” his players, a sense of control that Chip did his best to bring to the Eagles by releasing or trading anyone who went against his way of doing things.
The college game is a better fit for how Chip runs his offense. At the NFL level, the high-tempo style and complete disregard to time of possession found success against average opponents. It “can” work against the elite teams at the college level. With larger game day rosters and the emphasis on offense in the Pac-12, there is far less “change” that Chip would have to make.
Lastly, Chip likes to stay to himself, focus on football and not entertaining the media. The fact of the matter is simple, Chip only speaks when the NFL requires him to speak, and the college demand is far less.
At USC Chip can focus on coaching, dictating all football related matters and relinquishing full control, making the return.
