The Philadelphia Eagles made short work of the NFC East last season on their way to winning the Super Bowl. The Eagles posted a combined 5-1 record in the division last season and avenged their lone loss by throttling the Washington Commanders 55-23 in the NFC Championship Game.
The NFC East has tried to catch up this offseason as the Commanders added Laremy Tunsil and Deebo Samuel via trade. The Dallas Cowboys are trying to navigate life with two (and eventually three) top of the market contracts and the New York Giants’ front office is preparing for a season where their jobs are on the line.
It led to a surprising addition to the NFC East on Tuesday night and one that could make the division race dangerous entering the 2025 season.
Giants Sign Russell Wilson to Solve Their Quarterback Problem
The Giants agreed to terms with 10-time Pro Bowl and former Super Bowl champion quarterback Russell Wilson on Tuesday night. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the one-year deal is for $10.5 million but can reach up to $21 million with incentives.
The deal was much needed for the Giants considering the state of their quarterback room. Aaron Rodgers seems more focused on the Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings at this stage of free agency and New York needed an upgrade over the recently signed Jameis Winston and holdover Tommy DeVito.
Wilson won his title with the Seattle Seahawks in 2014 but hasn’t been the same quarterback since he was traded to the Denver Broncos ahead of the 2022 season. The 36-year-old has completed 63.4% of his passes for 9,076 yards, 58 touchdowns and 24 interceptions but had a Pro Bowl season in 2024 throwing for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions in 11 starts.
The addition is already big news in the Big Apple but could have a mixed reaction for Eagles fans. Winston is capable of starting games but his style of play is a turnover waiting to happen. The former No. 1 overall pick of the 2015 draft could still beat out Wilson for the starting job but it feels like the Giants added worthy competition after Wilson’s play in Pittsburgh.
There’s also the fact that Rodgers or Kirk Cousins will not be coming to the division, which also makes life easier for the Eagles. Either way, Wilson’s arrival makes things a little more interesting in the NFC East and could play a key role whether Philadelphia celebrates their third division title in the past four seasons.
