With all of the chatter about the possibility of the Philadelphia 76ers trading up for the first overall pick in the NBA Draft, there is reason for positivity. Markelle Fultz seems like the obvious choice with that pick, but it raises the question, if he is selected by the Sixers, does this mark the end of the Process?

Year after year, Sixers fans have had to deal with terrible losing seasons followed by questionable choices in free agency and the draft that never seem to pay off. Missing an entire season for young players like Nerlens Noel, Joel Embiiid, and Ben Simmons has been a normality. But now, the team is starting to show signs of coming back from the Eastern Conference cellar.

With an incredibly impressive half season out of Embiid, a strong rookie year out of Dario Saric, and the mouthwatering potential of Ben Simmons, the Sixers look to be on the verge of competing after years of lopsided losses. This offseason is incredibly important, the right moves could bring the team into the back end of the playoffs, which is why buying in on Fultz by taking for the first pick could be worth the risk.

Chants of “Trust the Process” are sure to echo through the Wells Fargo Center this season, but by drafting Fultz the Process we all know and love will have run its course. Yes, to a lot of people “The Process” is a state of mind but to many inside the franchise it is a period of time known for collecting draft picks and freeing up cap space for the future.

The time has come where these picks are being used to better the team now, a time many didn’t believe would ever happen.

Having the Lakers first round pick in 2018 and the Kings first rounder in 2019 creates the perfect opportunity to dive head first into being competitive again.

It may be tough to part ways with first rounders but the team isn’t mortgaging the future just for Fultz because they will still have their own picks. The risk in trading multiple picks for an unproven player will always be there, but the possibility of creating a Big three may be too tempting to pass up.

By trading for the first overall pick and drafting Markelle Fultz the Philadelphia 76ers are saying they are ready to win. The Process has passed us by, and while it is sad to say, it just means that better things are on the horizon.
