The second edition of the weekly Philadelphia Sports winner and loser of the week was not quite as clear-cut as the previous week.

Last week the staff of Section 215 agreed to give the inaugural weekly “L” to the Phillies for being unwatchable. We gave the first ever “W” of the week to the Union for their hard work and unbeaten streak. This week we crown a different loser and winner.

Let’s get right into it, shall we? The loser of this past week goes to none other than Phillies pitcher, Zach Eflin. This very well could have gone to the Phillies organization for the second week in a row, however, the staff of Section 215 agreed that Eflin should be the sole loser this week.

Eflin has had a rough season thus far, sporting a 0-3 record in eight games with an ERA of 6.13. He threw 47 innings, allowing 58 hits, 32 earned runs, and 11 home runs. After his last outing, five innings, nine hits, seven runs, the second year pitcher was sent down to AAA.

Zach Eflin came to Philadelphia in the trade that sent Jimmy Rollins to the Dodgers. While it was good to get a potential starting pitcher for an aging J-Roll, he hasn’t been a dominant big league pitcher by any stretch of the word. He is still young at 23 years old, but Elfin has a ways to go to be an effective MLB pitcher.

For his demotion, the staff of Section 215 would like to rub some metaphorical salt in the wound of the Iron Pigs newest pitcher, Zach Eflin. (Seriously, we hope he bounces back and returns better than ever.)

On the flip side of the spectrum, we have a first-time winner, Flyers General Manager, Ron Hextall!

Ron Hextall made headlines again this week for signing 2014 fifth round pick, Oskar Lindblom, to an entry level contract. Lindblom played last year in Sweden before deciding to make the jump to the NHL. Last year Oskar Lindblom scored 22 goals and added 25 assists over 52 games. This is the kind of production the Philadelphia Flyers need from a winger.

By signing Lindblom to an NHL contract, Ron Hextall gave the Flyers a young, competitive winger to compete for a roster spot. Hextall is getting this team young in a hurry. With the Lindblom signing, the Flyers should have five rookies: Oskar Lindblom, Mike Vecchione, Sam Morin, Anthony Stolarz, and either Nico Hischier or Nolan Patrick (this year’s second overall pick) on the roster. It is too early to say anything, but this is absolutely a step in the right direction.

In what was a slow week in Philadelphia Sports, this signing was a no-brainer for the winner of the week. Congratulations, Hexy!
