The Philadelphia Flyers were in need of a new assistant captain to join Claude Giroux. They decided to take an unorthodox route to fill the void.

The Philadelphia Flyers traded Mark Streit to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Valtteri Filppula, a fourth-round pick, and a conditional seventh. This move left the flyers with only a captain and one alternate.

The bullies could have gone a variety of ways in naming a second alternate captain. They could have given the honor to second-year defenseman, and fan favorite, Shayne Gostisbehere. However, Ghost is still a bit young and inconsistent to fill the role of alternate captain. Another good choice would have been Jake Voracek. He was passed over despite being one of the top scorers on the Flyers season after season.

Instead, the Philadelphia Flyers coaching a staff decides to take the path less traveled when naming their second alternate captain. They chose newly extended Center Pierre-Edouard Bellemare. A fantastic choice, to be honest.

More from Philadelphia Flyers

On being named captain, Bellemare said, “I’m super happy to represent the team this way and to be able to help the guys in the locker room.”

This is far from the “sexy” pick. He’s grinding player who gives 110% everytime he’s on the ice, even though he’s rarely rewarded with goals and points. He does the dirty work for the team and I’m thrilled that he’s been recognized for his hard work. Bellemare is one of those players who is a living definition of what it means to be a Flyer.

It’s refreshing to see a player who does a lot of thankless work be rewarded. Congratulations, Pierre, you deserve it!
