After a long wait, the Philadelphia Eagles are set to hire Mike Groh as their wide receivers coach reports Adam Caplan of ESPN.

Groh will join the Philadelphia Eagles after serving as the Los Angeles Rams’ passing coordinator and wide receivers coach. He’s just what the Eagles were looking for in an experienced coaching option in order to replace Greg Lewis who was fired due to the dismal performance of his unit last season. The 45-year-old brings a total of 16 years of coaching experience with him after various NFL and collegiate stops along the way.

Prior to his current post with the Rams, Groh previously spent three years with the Chicago Bears from 2013-15 and the Alabama Crimson Tide from 2011-12. Adding someone with his experience should be good for this young and largely unproven receiver core. Given that Groh was able to turn Kenny Britt into a 1000 yard receiver with the Rams — yes those Rams — it proves that there may be hope for the Eagles passing attack.

Groh has also worked with Alshon Jeffery while with the Bears and Amari Cooper while with Alabama so he does have a decent number of receiver success stories. While a deal hasn’t been announced yet, coming to the Philadelphia Eagles will prove to be one of his biggest tests yet. With a core of Jordan Matthews, Nelson Agholor, Dorial Green-Beckham, Bryce Treggs, and Paul Turner there is much to be desired.

More from Philadelphia Eagles

Luckily, this unit will likely look very different next year due to free agency and the draft which is exactly why the Philadelphia Eagles need an experienced coach to groom the youth. The Eagles also interviewed Sanjay Lal for the open job but are seemingly deciding on Groh instead. There is a direct connection between the Eagles and Groh as vice president of personnel Joe Douglas held a high-ranking position with the Bears personnel department while Groh was also there. It hasn’t been a day but this move is already sparking rumors for free agency.

The Rumor mill:

Groh has connections with current free agents to be, Kenny Britt and Alshon Jeffery leading to speculation that the Philadelphia Eagles may try to lure them in. Another option could be Brandon Marshall who the New York Jets may release this offseason. Any of these three would immediately become the number one option on this team.

These moves are always tough to judge but it seems like the Philadelphia Eagles are making the right choice here. Only time will tell how the current receivers will respond to his tutelage but if he can save Nelson Agholor, Groh will be hailed as a Philly legend.
