The Philadelphia Eagles decided to part ways with their scapegoat for a lackluster season. Lewis’ unit was pathetic all season long, ranked 24th in the league in receiving yards.

The argument could be made that the Philadelphia Eagles gave Lewis very little talent to work with. Two of his five wide receivers were undrafted rookies, one is largely considered the biggest bust since Danny Watkins, and one is an inconsistent, six-foot-five-inch monster with a limited route tree. His 5th option is a good (not great) slot receiver who was plagued with a foot injury in the second half of the season. With Nelson Agholor, Jordan Matthews, Dorial Green-Beckham, Bryce Treggs, and Paul Turner as your options at receiver, it’s clear to see why the Birds were so unproductive.

DGB and Nelson Agholor combined to make one decent receiver, their numbers were 72 catches for 757 yards and four touchdowns. Jordan Matthews totaled a career-low 73 catches for 804 yards and three touchdowns. Treggs and Turner played minimal parts in the offense. However, Turner did improve by the end of the season.

The Philadelphia Eagles hoped that the only receiver in team history to catch a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl could turn this receiving corps around. As it turns out, Greg Lewis is not the second coming of Bill Belichek, and the Eagles were forced to move on.

More from Philadelphia Eagles

The firing of Greg Lewis leads me to question if other position coaches on the Birds are on the hot seat. Corey Undlin, defensive backs coach, deserves to be there just as much as Lewis does. For what seems like the 10th year in a row the Eagles didn’t have anyone worth watching at cornerback. Undlin was known as a “cornerback whisperer” during his time with the Denver Broncos, yet the Eagles corners can’t turn their heads around when the ball is thrown their way. Could he be the next guy out?

Another guy that could be on the hot seat is defensive line coach, Chris Wilson. This past season was Wilson’s “rookie season” if you will. Regardless, the defensive line once considered the strongest point of this team, was average at best. Brandon Graham had a career year, but that was about it. I don’t think Wilson should be fired, but he needs to do a better job next season if he wants to be here when Carson Wentz brings the Lombardi Trophy to Philadelphia.

It is sad to see an Eagle lose his job, but at the end of the day, Greg Lewis’ unit did not perform to their expectations. The Eagles have not indicated who will replace him, it should be someone with experience, not a first-year coach.
