Regardless of whether or not tonight’s game is considered dress rehearsal or not, the final outcome of the game really means nothing. Winning or losing technically means nothing in a preseason game, just ask the 2008 Detroit Lions who went four and zero in the preseason, just prior to becoming the leagues’ first team to ever go winless on a 16 game slate. Just don’t tell me that when the Steelers are in town.
As an Eagles fan, my most hated team constantly wavers between the Giants and Cowboys, largely varying based on whether the media is currently kissing the ass of Eli Manning or jamming Jerry Jones down our throats. But make no mistake, my level of disdain for the Steelers is right up there with the Eagles’ two biggest NFC East foes.
I have no hatred for Steelers fans on the west side of Pennsylvania. Or the central. But I’ve lived on the east coast of Pennsylvania since I was three years old, and I’ve struggled through some really bad Philly sports seasons. For the most part, the Eagles haven’t been a part of that (2011 and 2012 were pretty miserable, though), but getting so close to winning the franchises’ first Superbowl title, has put me through a different type of pain. The Steelers on the other hand, have won two in the last ten years, six overall, and appeared in three over the course of the last decade. And yeah, I’m jealous.
My jealousy isn’t what drives my dislike for the Steelers, though. What does is the east-coast bandwagon cult of Steelers fans. If you are from Pittsburgh, or the surrounding area, or have family there, it’s whatever. The people who drive me insane are the ones who come out from hiding every four or so years, when the Steelers seem to be in the Superbowl. They tend to be obnoxious women. The type who wouldn’t root for the Eagles because Michael Vick was on their roster, but proudly rock their Ben Roethlisberger jersey every Sunday as they get piss drunk at the bar and brag about the team’s six titles that they didn’t watch. They obviously did the same when Tommy Maddox was slinging the ball for the black and gold.
Anyways, that long PG-13 explanation of my dislike for the Steelers, is why I will be treating tonight like a regular season game. Hopefully we get a little less Curtis Marsh and Damaris Johnson than last week.
