Eagles to wear black alternate jerseys to begin season

Last season, for the first time since Thanksgiving 2009, the Eagles wore their black alternate jerseys in what turned out to be a key Week 13 win over the Cardinals. The jerseys returned last night for the Eagles preseason loss to the Patriots, and apparently will be a mainstay early in the 2014 season.

When the NFL switched from Reebok to Nike as their official jersey provider in 2012, most teams upgraded to the Nike Elite 51 jerseys immediately. For whatever reason, the Eagles chose not to do so at that time.

According to Nike’s website, this is what the Nike 51 jersey is supposed to do, which probably means nothing to you.

The Nike Elite 51 Uniform is truly the next generation in superior lightweight performance delivering a fully integrated system of dress for athletes at the highest level. This uniquely engineered chassis and baselayer combination provides everything an athlete needs and nothing he doesn’t need. Rooted in body-led design, the uniform system is built for a body-contoured fit resulting in zero distractions in order to help amplify speed.

I’ve played enough sports, and run enough track events specifically, to know that the lighter something is, the easier it is to run in. Even if the difference is something as small as compression shorts. I’m sure in the case of a whole jersey, the players will like this transition. Why it couldn’t have been done in the offseason is beyond me.

In the meantime, get ready for numerous “Black Sundays”.
