Prior to yesterday’s benching against the Giants, with reports swirling that the Phillies have considered releasing him after the season, Ryan Howard seemed to handle his benching quite professionally. He was obviously frustrated-who wouldn’t be-but, he didn’t blame Ryne Sandberg or anyone in the Phillies organization.
A second consecutive day of being benched, against a pitcher in Tim Hudson that he has solid career numbers against, and Howard wasn’t singing the same tune.
“Talk to him,” Ryan Howard said as he left the Phillies clubhouse. “Him” would be Ryne Sandberg.

I wasn’t in the locker room, but it kind of sounds like Howard lost his temper and made a scene. Howard has been in Philly since 2005, and I’m struggling to think of another time when that happened.
And they can’t even give him away, either.
At first, eating $60 million over the next three years didn’t sound like something that was realistic, but I just can’t imagine Howard being with the team past this season. Maybe cooler heads prevail and Howard gets stuck accepting the idea of platooning, but even then, who benefits from Howard being on the team past this season?
I said it about a month ago, and it never holds truer than now, what if Ruben Amaro had just waited to give Ryan Howard his extension until he actually had to?
