Chase Utley to bat seventh in scary National League All-Star lineup

This afternoon, National League manager Mike Matheny released his starting lineup for the All-Star game. By choosing to insert Marlins’ slugger Giancarlo Stanton as the National League’s designated hitter, Matheny created a pretty scary lineup.

Chase Utley, a six-time All-Star and potential hall of famer, will bat seventh. Carlos Gomez of the Brewers, batting .304 and playing in his second consecutive mid-summer classic, will bat ninth.

Here’s the full lineup.

With Utley being the only representative for the Phillies, it would be nice to see him get two to three at-bats, for numerous reasons.

First off, I’d like to have a vested interest in the game as long as possible, because I really don’t care who wins the game that much, because it isn’t like the home-field advantage in the World Series will impact the Phillies.

Secondly, to see Utley get back to the All-Star game just a few years after injuries seemed to have destroyed his career is special. Given that he is 35 and the Phillies are a bad team, there’s no guarantee that he will ever get back as a Phillie. So I’d really like to see him play until the fifth or sixth inning, if possible.
