The latest story of Flyers captain Claude Giroux makes one really think he misses his lovable linemate and partner-in-crime, Scott Hartnell. Why? Because the types of shenanigans that had Giroux spend a night in an Ottawa jail are too outrageous to make up and seem to be right in Hartsy’s wheelhouse. According to the Ottawa Sun, Giroux was detained and released with no criminal charges after the following incident:
Although few details were immediately available, a source said Giroux was arrested for repeatedly grabbing the buttocks of a male police officer. Alcohol is believed to have been involved.
Giroux has been known to knock back a few adult beverages and this sort of tomfoolery is sometimes even seen on the ice by the Flyers franchise player. That being said, I can’t imagine the organization is thrilled to hear about the extracurricular activities of an individual they will be paying $66 million over the next eight seasons.
Giroux is not the first star hockey player (see Kane, Patrick) to deal with an embarrassing, alcohol-related incident and will certainly not be the last. That said, one hopes a night in the slammer for harassing a male police officer is somewhat of a wake-up call for Giroux.
