Report: Sixers trade Elfrid Payton to Magic for Dario Saric

Update: Sam Hinkie fleeced another general manager.

The 2017 first-round pick will likely be protected, with what I would guess, would only be a top-five protection. It is possible that it is lottery protected, but either way, Hinkie got a first-rounder basically by waiting two picks to get the guy that they actually wanted.

Original Article After the Sixers selected point-guard Elfrid Payton with the tenth overall pick, a majority of the NBA community felt that either Payton or Michael Carter-Williams would be on the move.

Carter-Williams was interviewed shortly after the selection and admitted that even he wasn’t sure that he wouldn’t be moved after the Sixers selected a player who is considered very similar to him. Carter-Williams did say that he trusted both General Manager Sam Hinkie and head coach Brett Brown, which appears to have been a smart move.

That trade comes after both Woj and ESPN’s Chad Ford predicted that Saric would come to Philly with the 10th pick. Frankly, other than maybe having to pay him a little less, I’m not sure why the Sixers didn’t just take Saric. Other than that reports indicate that the Sixers and Magic will swap future draft-picks, which could be beneficial to the Sixers down the road.

Those details are still being ironed out. With Embiid out four to six months, if not the whole season, and Saric having signed a deal in Turkey that will keep him from playing in the NBA for at least a year, it’s pretty evident that the Sixers didn’t get the superstar they wanted to build their team around (Andrew Wiggins), so they are going to be bad enough until they get they get the player. And if Joel Embiid turns out to be a star, then getting another lottery pick will only help to continue to build depth.
