Yesterday evening, I reacted to ESPN’s Chad Ford’s latest mock-draft, in which he had the Sixers selecting Australian point-guard Dante Exum with the third pick, and said that he thought the pick of Exum would up the Sixers’ ante to try to move Michael Carter-Williams for a third top ten pick in this year’s draft.
While the nearly nine dollars a month that I’m paying for ESPN Insider makes me want to think that Chad Ford’s mock-drafts are going to be perfect, getting another perspective never hurts. What I learned from Draft Express’ latest mock-draft, which was released yesterday evening, is that if the Sixers stay at number three, they will likely take Exum. What they will do with Carter-Williams from there, is going to be the interesting part.
With Joel Embiid potentially sliding due to health concerns, the 76ers will have to decide if they are willing to roll the dice once again after drafting Nerlens Noel last year, which appears unlikely. While Dante Exum doesn’t appear to be a great fit on paper next to Michael Carter-Williams, the Sixers are not in a position to reach for a player due to positional concerns, as they are still in an early stage of their rebuilding process. Exum has the size to play alongside Carter-Williams and may end up making last year’s Rookie of the Year expendable at some point if the Sixers decide to cash in while his value is possibly at its highest.
This scenario seems to make more sense to me because you are not only taking the best healthy player available, but keeping MCW in the short-term gives you a chance to see if him and Exum couldn’t work together. It also gives you a shot to make sure that Exum actually pans out in the NBA, because if he doesn’t, having traded away a player who won rookie of the year and showed promise (Carter-Williams), would be held against Sam Hinkie for his entire tenure. I also have warmed up to the idea of two 6’6 guards in the backcourt, especially on the defensive side of things. There might be some positives if Exum and Carter-Williams were able to team up.
