Making money off of March Madness: Sweet Sixteen picks against the spread

Mar 23, 2014; San Antonio, TX, USA; Baylor Bears guard Brady Heslip (5) hugs center Isaiah Austin (21) in the first half of a men

Boy did the NCAA Basketball tournament ever live up to it’s nickname last week? Between the early upsets of Duke and ‘Cuse, it was true madness. With so many overtime games (especially the VCU upset), fans stayed glued to their media devices as the tournament progressed through the weekend. It was some great entertainment and surely lived up to it’s second billing (behind the Superbowl)  as the greatest annual sporting event in North America, or maybe even the world.

To top it all off, making a little extra cash on the side never hurts. A 4-1 record (against the spread) in the opening rounds, gives us a nice little bankroll to play with this week. Let’s keep it rolling with these games.

Baylor Bears(+3.5) to cover against Wisconsin Badgers

I absolutely love this match-up. Baylor is my dark horse in this tournament and I think they have what it takes to win this game straight-up. The Bears are a big, physical team that doesn’t get winded, they keep coming at you.  They bring a good mix of scoring from Brady Heslip and Isaiah Austin, and junior forward Royce O’Neale has been a solid player on both ends so far. Wisconsin won’t be able to play in the paint with the Bears and will have to make the outside shot. Creighton, Baylor’s last opponent, had a similar game plan and failed miserably. Baylor’s getting too many points here, take them and run.

Arizona Wildcats(-7) to cover against San Diego State Aztecs

The Aztecs have had a great season, but it ends here. Besides Xavier Thames, who is going to score for the Aztecs? San Diego lost by nine, at home, against Arizona back in November and that seems like a good number for this game.

Arizona has a well balanced scoring attack that dismantled a good Gonzaga squad last time out. In Arizona’s 32 wins, their average margin of win was 17.1, and against an average Sweet Sixteen opponent in San Diego State, I expect the Wildcats to cover the 7.

So far…

Our bracket took a few hits (like everyone’s), but we still managed to advance nine out of 16 teams to the Sweet Sixteen, which isn’t bad in a year like this. If somebody had Mercer to beat Duke in their bracket, please message me and I will add you to my list of insiders. I need all the info I can get.
