For a night, tanking didn’t matter. Allen Iverson being in debt wasn’t even a concern. Nor was the fact that Billy King and Ed Snider could never surround Allen Iverson with a team that was good enough to get over the hump and win an NBA Title. All that mattered was reflecting on the truly special career of Allen Iverson, and the unique relationship he had with a fanbase that to this day worships him.
My favorite part of the entire speech by Iverson, was when he called Philadelphia “the best fans in the world.” Iverson may have had some trials and tribulations, on and off the court, in his time in Philadelphia, but no player that has played in Philadelphia over the past 20 years brought it and laid everything on the field/court/diamond the way that Allen Iverson did. And Philly doesn’t ask for much more than that.
