Well that was unpleasant. In their series against the Nationals, the Phillies failed in just about every aspect of the game. They didn’t hit well, they didn’t field well, their starting pitching was poor, and the less said about the relief pitching, the better. After the three-game sweep, the Phillies have now lost eleven straight games on the road.
I attended the game on Saturday, and I could just see how it was going to turn out. I said to my friend, “Doesn’t it seem like the Phillies have played this exact same game about fifty times this season?” We then distracted ourselves from the misery by debating how much fun it would be to beat up the Nationals’ mascot.
Things aren’t going to get much easier for the Phillies as their road trip continues with a stop in Atlanta. In case you weren’t paying attention, the Braves currently have the best record in baseball and have seemingly won just about every game since the All-Star break. So you’ve got an ice-cold team travelling to face an insanely hot team. Things could get ugly, folks.
The Last Time They Met
The Braves had their way with the Phillies, recording a three-game sweep when the teams met in Philadelphia a few weeks ago.
What’s New with the Braves
The Braves actually lost a game this weekend! I kid you not. At the end of Saturday night’s game against the Marlins, the Braves actually had fewer runs than their opponent. That setback ended a 14-game winning streak. The Braves didn’t seem to be too demoralized by the loss, as they recorded a win on Sunday.
Reasons Why the Phillies May Win
I’m trying to come up with some reasons why the Phillies may win this series. I’m not going to lie to you; it isn’t easy.
1. Despite his poor record, Cole Hamels has been pitching well lately. He should at least give the team a fighting chance at victory in the opener.
2. Justin Upton’s status for the game is questionable due to a hamstring injury. Upton notoriously got off to a blazing hot start to the season, and then cooled off considerably after April. Since the beginning of August, he’s been hot again, batting .366 with six home runs. Then again, considering how well everything has been going for the Braves, it is likely that his replacements hits two home runs tonight.
3.It stands to reason that the Phillies will win another road game at some point this season. This losing streak can’t last forever, right?
Tweet of Optimism
If anyone can find one, please let me know. The Twitterverse isn’t exactly brimming with positivity regarding the Phillies these days.
Tweet of Pessimism
Pretty much all of them, but this one stood out:

Maybe the fortunes of both teams are due to turn around? Stranger things have happened.
