Report: Jeremy Maclin has torn ACL

This is one of those moments that as a sports fan you just shake your head.

I come from the mindset that Jeremy Maclin is the best overall receiver that the Eagles have on their roster, but if early reports on today’s events are any indication, he may be the best wide receiver that the Eagles had.

Reports started to surface at about one-thirty that Jeremy Maclin had sustained an injury in just day two of training camp, and had to be carted off the field after struggling to stand up.

The towel over his head wasn’t a good sign. Usually players will do that when they know they suffered a major injury. I think the original speculation was that Jeremy Maclin tore his ACL, but we all hoped for something less serious than that, as unlikely as it may have sounded. Still, if Maclin had a towel over his head, it meant the worse. And Maclin is all too familiar with the worst injury in sports, as he tore his ACL back in his days at Missouri.

And if reports are to be believed, Maclin believes that he has torn his ACL a second time, which would likely cost him the entire 2013 season, which was set to be the final year of his rookie contract.

Maclin caught 69 balls last year for 857 yards, and seven touchdowns, all of which were team highs. DeSean Jackson hopefully will have a bounce-back season in 2013 after two down years in 2011 and 2012, but losing Maclin would be a huge blow as the Eagles try to build their team through Chip Kelly’s offense.

Again, nothing is official yet, but the early prognosis on Maclin doesn’t sound good. We will keep you posted as more comes in.

3:22 Update: News isn’t exactly getting better on the Jeremy Maclin front. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Eagles view an MRI on Jeremy Maclin as likely confirmation that Maclin has torn both his ACL and MCL.

5:00 Update: ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Adam Caplan are reporting that Maclin indeed does have a torn ACL, and will be out for the season.

Fox Sports has also confirmed the unfortunate news.
