Dear Ruben, it's time to trade Chase Utley

Tim Hudson was lost for the season, on a gruesome injury last night for the Atlanta Braves. In a sense, it kind of makes you want to not completely give up on this Phillies team and sell at the July 31st trade deadline. At the same time, the Phillies have clearly demonstrated with their one and four record since the All-Star break, that they aren’t a playoff team. They lost two of three to the Mets, and have a chance to be swept by the St. Louis Cardinals tonight. I was willing to go along with the small chances that the Phillies had to make the playoffs until I felt that it was comical to continue to believe. Last night’s 11-3 loss at the hands of the Cardinals was where I reached that point. That doesn’t make me less of a fan, it means that I am properly doing my job and giving you an objective opinion.

One of the players whose name has been discussed as a potential trade deadline candidate, is Chase Utley. It’s hard for many to move on from Utley, not only because of the fact that he was a key member of the 2008 World Series team, but because of the passion he plays the game with. At the same time, tweets like these two make you remember why it may be in the Phillies best interests to trade Utley rather than sign him to a two or three year extension at the end of this season.

I love Utley, but in this video I explain why trading Utley at the deadline is the smart thing to do, and what it opens up for the Phillies going forward.
