In his latest post yesterday, CBS Sports Senior Baseball analyst Danny Knobler, talked about just how interested the Texas Rangers are in Cliff Lee, and how they have the financial flexibility and prospects to get a deal done.
The Rangers have money, because Zack Greinke and Josh Hamilton turned them down last winter.
The Rangers have prospects, because they didn’t trade them for Justin Upton or James Shields.
The Rangers should be in a great position to make an impact trade this month, and they would be … if only an impact guy were available.
The problem according to Knobler, is that the Phillies just don’t seem to be willing to even consider offers for Cliff Lee.
Perhaps, but at this point the Phillies seem to have most people in baseball convinced that they won’t trade Lee (or maybe anyone else).
Despite the Phillies win over the Nationals last night, the “or many anyone else” scares me. I am on board with listening to offers for Cliff Lee, but the Phillies would have to get a boatload of blue-chip prospects for me to be willing to part with Lee. As for Papelbon, Utley, and Michael Young, I’m much more open to trades. Not necessarily because I want to get rid of anyone of them, especially the first two, but because deep down we know the Phillies need to replenish their minor-league system and build for the future. We can get caught up in the fact that the Phillies have won five of eight, because we are fans. Ruben Amaro is paid to make the best decisions to help put the Phillies back on a parade down Broad Street. And I hope before July 31st he does just that, and makes at least a trade or two that helps put the Phillies in a position to win a world title.
