New Sixers General Manager Sam Hinkie appears to be taking a look at all possible options for the Sixers to select at the number 11 pick in this month’s NBA Draft.
According to CSN Philly the latest NBA Draft prospects work out for the Sixers are two names that should be familiar to Philadelphia Basketball fans; Khalif Wyatt of Temple and C.J. Aiken of St. Joes.
Guard Khalif Wyatt averaged 20.5 points per game, while dishing out four assists, and grabbing nearly three rebounds per game in his senior season at Temple last year. Wyatt is likely to be closer to a middle round pick, but the Sixers looking at him shows that they are exploring all available options.
Center C.J. Aiken averaged 10.4 points per game, pulled down 5.6 rebounds, and averaging just over two and a half blocks per game, during his Junior season at Temple. If the Sixers go with a big man at the number 11 spot, it will likely be Indiana’s Cody Zeller. If Zeller is taken the Sixers may attempt to move back in the draft to select Aiken. Selecting either Aiken or Zeller would all but punch a ticket for Andrew Bynum out of Philly.
The draft is on Thursday June 27th, and while the Sixers don’t have a top five pick this draft is key for a few reasons. The first is that it is Sam Hinkie’s first draft as Sixers General Manager, and we have been told that Hinkie has a very good eye for talent, not only in the first round, but in the second and third. The second reason is that how well the Sixers do in the draft, may determine what head coaching candidates would be interested in coming to the Sixers. My guess is that the Sixers will have a new coach by draft night, but to this point they don’t. The third reason this draft is important is that if Andrew Bynum leaves, the Sixers will have a good amount of cap space available to go after a star in free-agency. The issue is that besides Jrue Holdiay, there is nothing currently in Philly, that would make anyone want to come join the 76ers. The Sixers need to. beginning in this draft, build a solid core around Holiday, in hopes of landing a premier free-agent sometime over the next few seasons.
