Last night I was a guest on “Fansided Tonight” and when host John Ackeren asked me who the Sixers were eyeing as their next head coach, it was tough for me to give an answer. I knew that Larry Brown had shot down reported interest, that they had shown interest in Warriors assistant Mike Malone and Jazz assistant Sam Hornacek, but that it appeared in my mind that the Sixers were going to have to wait and allow bigger vacancies like the Clippers, Grizzles, Nuggets, and Nets fill, before they could make a choice at head coach. But,according to Marc Stein of ESPN though, the Sixers appear to have a few other candidates in mind than the ones that we originally heard.
Coaches said to be on Philly’s radar as part of a deliberate coaching search: Heat assistant David Fizdale & Nuggets assistant Melvin Hunt
— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) June 7, 2013
Fizdale is interesting because he comes from the Heat, but Erik Spoelstra is a slightly above average coach to me that is in a great situation, so bringing in Fizdale, who has been working under Spo, wouldn’t blow me away. Melvin Hunt seems like a candidate that will certainly be available now that George Karl was let go in Denver, and the Nuggets will likely bring in a whole new coaching staff. Fizdale is a guy that the Sixers will have to wait until after the NBA Finals to interview, while the Sixers may have already started to interview Hunt.
As soon as there are any new developments on the Sixers coaching front, Section 215 will pass the news along.
