Chase Utley can be activated from the 15-day disabled list as soon as June fifth. But in an interview earlier this morning on MLB Network Radio, Charlie Manuel didn’t make it seem like Chase would be back that quickly.
“He’ll be out another three weeks probably”
-Charlie Manuel’s thoughts on when Chase Utley will return
Charlie Manuel isn’t the one examining Utley, so I wouldn’t take Utley being out for three weeks as a drop dead date. But the fact that Manuel, who is in communication with both Utley and team doctors, thinks that Utley is going to be out three more weeks, shows that Chase Utley certainly is going to be out longer than June fifth. And beyond that we really don’t know much.
Utley is on the fifteen day disabled list with what the Phillies deemed “a grade one oblique strain”. And give his injury history over the last few seasons, Utley told MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki, that he doesn’t plan to come back before he feels 100 percent.
“The main thing they said was, ‘Don’t rush back, that’s when you can make it worse and prolong the time you’re out.”
So it wouldn’t surprise me if Utley is out for three more weeks, if that what it takes to get healthy. It also wouldn’t surprise me given Utley’s gamer attitude, if June 12th, he is manning second base for the Phillies. For the time being, Freddy Galvis is more than a capable replacement. The issue isn’t Galvis being good enough to play everyday, but the fact that losing Chase Utley’s bat, out of an already feeble lineup for three more weeks, could come back to bite the Phillies later on this season.
