As you know, on Tuesday night during batting practice, Chase Utley felt bad pain in his right rib cage after taking a swing. He was then scratched from Tuesday’s game, and Freddy Galvis was his replacement.
Charlie Manuel said, “When he took a swing, he felt a little burn, a pain in his rib cage. Sometimes if you keep playing that can get more serious and you lose time. I’ve had those things. It’s hard to breathe, really hard to swing. We’ll see. Hopefully we don’t lose him for very long.”
Today, Utley got the very unfortunate news that he will need an MRI.
Ruben Amaro Jr. said, “We’ll probably MRI him today or tomorrow, figure out how significant it is and go from there. I was texting back and forth with Scott Sheridan, our head trainer, and, that’s life. You have to deal with it. Utley is a guy who’s in perfect condition, he’s in great condition. He eats right, prepares himself better than anybody, and yet he takes one swing and pulls his rib cage. This is part of the game, part of life. Hopefully you have the reinforcements to be able to cover.”
Hopefully this MRI will reveal something not too significant, as the Phillies truly need Utley back as fast as possible. And if the injury is significant, this could possibly even be a blessing in disguise as this will lead to Freddy Galvis receiving more playing time.
