It’s Official: Philadelphia Wants The Games

Philly likes it…so will they put five rings on it?

Mayor Michael Nutter recently sent a letter to the United States Olympic Committee expressing the City of Brotherly Love’s interest in hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics. Philadelphia was one of 35 cities the USOC sent letters at to gauge interest in a bid for the 2024 Games.

Other cities have also expressed interest such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, Dallas, Tulsa, and even a joint bid by San Diego & Tijuana which reportedly tried to reach out to Mitt Romney to lead its effort.

The former presidential candidate and head of Salt Lake City 2002? Yeah, that Mitt Romney. He declined the San Diego-Tijuana offer.

The last time Philly put its hat in the five ring circus was for the 2016 bidding which also included Houston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

There was already a grassroots effort by locals in the Delaware Valley to bring the Games to Philadelphia eleven years from now. Such an effort will likely be ratcheted up now that the Mayor is behind an effort as well.

The folks behind that indie Twitter account (@Philly2024) have been reaching out on Twitter to any and every Philadelphia celeb and luminary they can name.

While the 2024 jockeying has already began, the 2020 Host City announcement (which will happen later this Fall between Tokyo, Istanbul, and Madrid) will likely affect who gets 2024. It has been suggested that after some harsh comments from the Tokyo camp that Istanbul has moved into the lead in the bidding.

One other thing that is possible from this is that Mayor Nutter is a reader of Section 215 and happened to read this
