Carson Palmer may be at the twilight of his NFL career, now with his third team in the Arizona Cardinals, but he is the last quarterback to come out of USC and have any prolonged success at the NFL level. So his opinion holds some relevance on the guy, who Eagles fans hope is the next great USC Quarterback in the NFL, Matt Barkley.
The Eagles selected Matt Barkley, surprisingly, with the first pick in round four of Saturday’s NFL draft. Carson Palmer, was asked his opinion on Barkley in an “NFL All-Access” interview, and Palmer said the following.
“I know Matt can play. I’ve had the opportunity to work out with him over the last couple of years. And I’ve obviously had a chance to watch him play.”
Of course, what else is Palmer going to say? But having an NFL quarterback who has played at a pro-bowl level have faith that you will have success in your NFL career, certainly isn’t a bad thing.
Palmer also went as far as saying “For him to go in the fourth round is an absolute steal.”
Ultimately Barkley is going to be a work in progress for Chip Kelly and the Eagles, and the likely-hood that he starts anytime in the first half of this year isn’t high. But if Chip Kelly has a plan and place for Barkley, and lets Barkley truly get acclamated to the NFL, rather than throwing him straight into the fire, Barkley may very well end up being a steal, like Palmer says he is.
