While Mat McBriar was an obvious improvement over Sav Rocca in 2012, he was still an average punter at best. Monday the Eagles made a move they hope will end their recent run of poor punting, by signing former pro-bowler Donnie Jones to a one-year deal. Signing Jones left no spot for Mat McBriar on the Birds in 2013, who the teams decided to release today, after just one season in the city of brotherly love.
Eagles GM Howie Roseman had high praise for the team’s new punter today saying, “He has one of the strongest legs in the entire NFL and we’re excited we had a chance to sign him.”
Jones, 32 years old, joins the Eagles after one year with the Houston Texans. Prior to that Jones spent four years in St Louis. As long as all goes well, Jones figures to be the Eagles best punter in quite a while.
