Despite a strong spring campaign in which he hit .447 and drove in 14 runs, the Phillies have decided to part ways with infielder Yuniesky Betancourt. Betancourt, according to Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly, will draw interest from the Yankees and Cardinals. Also Andrew Baggerly of CSN Bay Area, tweeted earlier that Giants scouts “thought Betancourt had a good game when they saw him.” So in all likelihood Betancourt will find a new job within the next 24 hours.
As for the impact that it will have on the Phillies, many felt that when Darin Ruf was sent to Triple-A Thursday that it clinched that Betancourt would make the MLB roster. Instead Beerleaguer says that Freddy Galvis has likely earned a utility spot, with the demotion of Ruf, and release of Betancourt. It could also mean that Ruben Amaro Jr., who hinted Friday that the Phillies could still add another outfielder or catcher, is keeping a roster spot open for a potential upcoming move. Either way the spot will not go to Yuniesky Betancourt.
