As the Flyers continue to look for a veteran defenseman to replace Chris Pronger and add more defensive depth, CSN Philly’s Tim Panaccio is reporting that the Flyers have moderate interest in San Jose Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle.
Panaccio reminds Flyers fans that not only does Boyle come with a high price tag (6.6 million against the cap), but that there is no indication at this point that the Sharks are ready to become sellers. At the same time if the season ended today the Sharks would miss the playoffs, so there is no saying they wouldn’t be willing to move Boyle if the right offer presented itself.
Boyle would be a tremendous addition to the Flyers providing both much needed defensive depth and leadership, but at the same time he is a 36 year-old with only one year left on his deal, and it would likely take a decent package to acquire Boyle via trade. This is a wait and see situation for the Flyers and Panaccio reminds Flyers fans that if the Flyers acquire anyone, it will not be a rental player, but rather a piece that is under contract for at least next season.
