Since the Eagles are set to join a majority of the rest of the NFL, and switch to a 3-4 defense under new defensive coordinator Bill Davis, many Eagles fans have pondered what Trent Cole’s future with the team is. Cole would be switching to rushing the passer virtually every play in the wide-nine scheme, to having to sometimes cover tight ends and recievers in the traditional 3-4 defense that Bill Davis is expected to bring to Philly. With that taken into account, the idea of trading Trent Cole has come up in many circles. This morning Tim McManus of 97.5 The Fanatic and Philly Mag’s Birds 24/7 addressed this issue among many other on the defensive side of the ball for the Birds.
McManus said that while trade speculation has come up he “doesn’t see it”. McManus also talked about how not only are the Eagles still high on Cole as a player, but they view him as a leader in what looks to be a younger locker room. McManus believes that Cole is the favorite to line up across from Conner Barwin at outside linebacker.
Cole, 30, has spent his entire nine season career with the Eagles racking up over 70 sacks. That being said, Cole is coming off of a season in which he posted a career low three sacks, so he certainly isn’t untouchable.
