Delmon Young, who the Phillies signed to compete for one of the corner outfield spots back in January, will miss the start of the season. Young is still recovering from an ankle injury that he had taken care of prior to signing with the Phils. Young will be placed on the 15-day disabled list.

This comes according to Howard Eskin of 94 WIP, who says that Young could miss “weeks into the season.”

Young’s injury almost guarantees Domonic Brown will be starting at one of the corner outfield spots to begin the season, and opens up the door for either Darin Ruf or John Mayberry to start on opening day.

If either Brown, Mayberry, and Ruf prove that they have the ability to hold it down in the outfield on a regular basis, it may put Delmon Young’s future with the Phillies in question. Young only signed for one-year 750,000 deal, and if he isn’t coming back to a chance to start, it is very possible he gets designated for assignment once he is ready to come off of the disabled list.
