Rejoice Philly, Chase Utley feels good as Spring Training begins. And not just pretty good, but as Utley said today in his first press conference of the season he, “Feels pretty damn good right now.”
What does this quote really mean? Essentially nothing. Chase Utley could start the first game of spring training, and his knee could flare up and we could be back to starting the season without Utley, much like 2011 and 2012.
But, I don’t want to rain on everyone’s parade either. Utley entering the season feeling good will hopefully be a carryover from the positive feeling he left us with last year. While he only hit .256 with 11 homeruns, what he showed is that he was beginning to get some of the pop back in his swing. That was largely due to the fact that Utley was no longer just swinging with his arms like he did in 2011, because he once again had use of his legs in his swing.
The best bet for Utley in 2013 is for him to play 125 games, hit .265 and hopefully have close to 20 round-trippers. Anything more than that, is expecting too much out of the 34 year-old at this point.
