Can Jrue Holiday's All-Star recognition, propel a second half turnaround for the Sixers?

The 2012 summer was kind to the Philadelphia 76ers. While the Lakers were able to make the biggest splash of the off-season by acquiring Dwight Howard, the Sixers were able to pick up one of the NBA’s best young players in Andrew Bynum.

Fast forward to January 2013, and Bynum is yet to play a game for the Sixers, and the Sixers sit eight games under .500, with a 17-25 record.

The one bright spot of the team, has been the play of point-guard Jrue Holiday. Holiday is averaging nearly 20 points per game and nine assists.

Thursday, Holiday was rewarded with his first All-Star appearance, as the Eastern Conference All-Star reserves were announced. Holiday will join Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics, as the point-guards on the Eastern Conference All-Star team.

Holiday got high praise from Josh Harris, managing partner of the Sixers, who said the following, “We are extremely proud of Jrue and consider him to be one of the cornerstones of our franchise and also one of the NBA’s bright young stars.”

While the All-Star game, which will be held in Houston this year, is not the most competitive game, it is more about the honor for Holiday. The NBA All-Star game, as with most All-Star games, is more about the overall experience of the weekend, and just saying that you were an All-Star.

Holiday is the second Sixers All-Star in as many years, following up former Sixer Andre Iguodala, who also mad his first All-Star appearance last season.

Holiday’s All-Star appearance, coupled with a hopeful return, or premiere, of Andrew Bynum, should hopefully propel the Sixers to a second half turnaround. Either way congratulations to Jrue Holiday on his first All-Star appearance.
