Good news coming out of Phillies camp today…or is it? Anyway, the news is that third baseman Placido Polanco, who has been on the DL with a strain in his lower back, will be traveling to Clearwater, Florida this tomorrow to begin his rehabbing assignment on his way back to the big league club.
An optimistic Charlie Manuel told the media that Polanco could be activated as soon as this upcoming Monday. That forecast is if everything goes well during Polanco’s work. Polanco has multiple days of work coming up for him. On Wednesday he will play 5-6 innings, he will be the designated hitter on Friday, on Saturday we will play in 7-9 innings. Sunday will be another off day and Monday he will head back to the city of Brotherly Love to be evaluated by team doctors.
As the season winds down and with the playoffs clearly out of reach for the Phillies, everyone is looking towards the future. Most likely that future doesn’t include the 36-year old Polanco. Polly is in the last year of his contract. There is a club-option for 2013, but the Phillies should not and probably won’t exercise it. Polanco, in my opinion, has greatly under produced this season. Kevin Frandsen has been playing third base consistently in his absence and I am in love with him. Frandsen is more than adequate defensively and delivers at the plate more than Polly.
As for his long-term replacement, the experts believe will be from the market. Personally, I do not want a guy off the market. I want Ruben Amaro Jr. to give Frandsen a chance as the starter. So far his play has warranted the shot during spring training in 2013, but we will really have to keep a close eye on him for the rest of 2012.
