Randy Moss is once again making big headlines as he expressed his interest in returning to the NFL. He has been a controversial player his entire career, but his success and his abilities cannot be overlooked. Moss needs an NFL team to play for and the Eagles need a big redzone receiver. Is this a Valentine’s Day match made in heaven?
It is no secret that the Eagles have had interest in Randy’s talents. They pursued him aggressively in 2008 after his divorce from the New England Patriots, and also tried to persuade him out of retirement last year with an offer of ‘straight cash homie’. Moss was not interested in playing last year because of what he refers to as “some personal family issues”. He has been quoted recently that his family has given him their blessing to return to the NFL and he plans to do so. According to a source around Moss, the Jets and Eagles have noted their interest and are “at least curious”.
Who knows if there is any validity to this statement, but it is an interesting thought to ponder. The Eagles currently lack a veteran presence in the receiving corps, and have remained dependent on the inconsistent talents of Desean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. They also lack a prototypical “redzone threat”. Moss is a 6’4”, 215 pound touchdown machine with great speed and leaping ability. It would seem as if Randy might be just what the doctor ordered for the Eagles.
The Eagles haven’t shied away from controversial players in the past either. Terrell Owens and Michael Vick just may be the two most controversial players in the NFL over the past decade and the Eagles offered both of them contracts. Also, it has been reported recently that they plan to resign controversial wide receiver, Desean Jackson. The Eagles are a very established franchise with a veteran head coach and a superstar quarterback who takes command of the offense. It seems like a system that Moss would fit into quite nicely.
It is all just speculation as of right now, but don’t be surprised if the Eagles make a little bit of a push to snatch up Randy Moss. In 2004, the missing ingredient was a big-time, dynamic wide receiver. The Birds went out and signed Terrell Owens, and a few months later found themselves one drive short of winning a Super Bowl. Is Randy Moss that missing ingredient in 2012?
Also, Howard Eskin has reported that Plaxico Burress has an extreme interest in playing for the Eagles next season. Plax is undoubtedly one of the most hated NFL players in Philadelphia, but as we have seen with Jaromir Jagr, fans in Philadelphia tend to embrace players who cross over to the “good side” and perform well. Plax also offers the size and hands the Eagles need in the redzone. Don’t be surprised if one of these big receivers find themselves in Eagles’ green before kickoff in 2012.
