Should the NFL Abolish the Pro Bowl?

by News

Re-runs, infomercials, Dancing with the Stars; those are some of the most hated programs that air on cable. Now, it is safe to add the NFL Pro-Bowl to that list of putrid shows. For years fans have seen the lack of effort and the all-around static play of the all-stars of the National Football League, now Commissioner Roger Goodell sees it too. On Super Bowl Sunday’s edition of Mike&Mike in the Morning, Goodell said that he and NFLPA director, DeMaurice Smith have had talks about altering the Pro-Bowl to enhance its level of play or even eliminate the game altogether. I personally would support the elimination of the Pro-Bowl.

At this past season’s festivities, Aloha Stadium, the site of the Pro Bowl in Hawaii, was fairly empty. The fans that did come out to watch the game booed the majority of the “contest”. The Pro-Bowl has no actual meaning. The MLB added an incentive to their all-star game by granting the winning league home field advantage in the World Series. The NHL added a little excitement to theirs by picking captains for the two different squads and having a draft to choose rosters similar to kickball on the playground. The NBA’s isn’t much better than the NFL’s.

I love the fact that Commissioner Goodell recognizes the fans’ displeasure with the event and is taking the initiative to change it. Unfortunately, there really isn’t anything he or Smith can do to fix this catastrophe. The players want to continue the tradition as they get a nice vacation to Hawaii for themselves and their families and a nice check for “participating”. It is just unfixable.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who participated in the recent Pro Bowl, called out his NFC teammates for the lack luster style of play. I congratulate Aaron for his comments as it needed to be said. Both teams played without any desire, but the AFC won which barred them from some ridicule. I’m sure other players have taken notice to this poor display of football, but they have stayed mute because they want the game to live on.

The Pro Bowl is the worst all-star game in all the major sports. They need to abolish it and try to save the integrity of the NFL. I’m sure the Hawaiians will miss being able to attend one NFL game a year, but I believe a fair trade will be to place an NFL team there when the league places one in Los Angeles. Goodell has said that if a team goes in LA, they will start another one somewhere else. How about Honolulu?
