Phillies Sign Reliever Qualls

by MLB

The Phillies have added another arm to the bullpen. This arm belongs to reliever Chad Qualls. He and the Phillies agreed to a 1-year, $1.15 million contract.

Qualls is a 33 year old right-handed reliever who went 6-8 with a 3.51 ERA in 77 appearances for the San Diego Padres last season. Qualls will most likely be a late inning and situational guy for the Phillies. This deal went down because Jose Contreras had right elbow surgery this off-season, and it is unsure whether he will be ready for opening day or not.

This is just another pitcher the Phillies can add to their already loaded bullpen. The pitching situation for the upcoming season is looking very good, but that is what everyone said before last season, and the Phillies didn’t achieve their ultimate goal. The starting rotation will be consistent for most of the year and this improvement in the bullpen will be a big help when a starter is having a difficult game.

Qualls will be wearing the number 50.
