News has surfaced that the Sixers have inquired about the New York Knick’s willingness to deal Amare Stoudemire. The Knicks keep plummeting toward the bottom of the Atlantic Division and now sit 7 games back of the Sixers with a 7-13 record. There is a lot of rumors swirling in New York (as always), but the most consistent piece of conversation is that the Knicks’ two superstars, Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire, are struggling to coexist. There is not a trade in the works, as this is simply just the Sixers sending out some feelers.
Amare would be a great addition to the Sixers, but at what cost? They certainly need help up front if they want to contend for an NBA title, but I think this Sixers team may have their eyes on the future rather than the here and now. A trade that would acquire Amare Stoudemire would most likely include some combination of Evan Turner, Jrue Holiday, Andre Iguodala, and/or draft picks. I’m not sure this is a move the Sixers are looking to make right now. I would rather see them move forward with their young core players and acquire big men through free agency or the draft, and I think this is what the front office thinks as well. As they stated, they are just doing their “due diligence” to see what the asking price may be for an elite big man like Amare.
Either way, this is something to keep our eyes on. Even though a deal for Amare may be unlikely, it is a good sign that the Sixers front office is staying active and constantly trying to make the team better. Just the fact that they have inquired about the Knicks’ intentions shows a couple things: the organization’s recognition of a need at power forward/center and their willingness to go out and grab one if the asking price isn’t outlandish. In my opinion, I’m just not willing to give up Jrue and ET for an aging player who has already shown inabilities to fit into certain systems. I’m interested to see if a third team will get involved or if anything will materialize in this potential blockbuster deal.
